Steve Rubel: 2009 Media Trends

Steve Rubel, SVP/Director of Insights for Edelman Digital, author of the Micro Persuasion weblog, AdAge columnist and avid sports fan, came to Newhouse talking about 2009 media trends. (Follow him as one of over 20,000 followers on twitter, @steverubel)

I live twittered about his talk, and this post gives a little more space and more time to write details.

1. Understand how people search He mentioned one blogger will post blog posts with catchy headlines, and then after couple weeks when the posts do not get that much attention, he will go back to his post and change his title make the post more searchable by Google. That’s genius.

2. “We look for not only skilled people, but people known and respected in the community.” Let other people know you by twittering, facebooking and other social networking systems. Get a blog. Say somethings. Let your voice be heard.

3. People online don’t read, they scan. How can we adopt the reading habits of online readers, and take full advantage of that? Catchy headlines? Short but precise sentence? More engaging phrases?

4. Twitter is public. It’s like email “cc:world.” So know your audience. Who is following you? What do they want from you? Different from any other social network, twitter has its own culture. Did you get that?

5. When people have problems on something, the first source people come to is Google. Google is more than a search engine. it’s where people having questions come to for the first help. Again, how they search? How is this concept is going to help increase your exposure”?
